Mission
BridgeUSA at Lehigh is the campus chapter of BridgeUSA, a national nonpartisan student organization. Our mission is to give Lehigh students a place to talk honestly about political and social issues with people who disagree with them.

We host structured, student-moderated discussions governed by a shared set of ground rules: listen to understand rather than to respond, address the argument rather than the person, don't interrupt or hold side conversations, and let people speak for themselves rather than for any group they belong to. Discussions are designed so that no viewpoint is the default and no one is asked to change their mind.

BridgeUSA at Lehigh does not endorse or oppose candidates, parties, or policy positions. We are not a debate club and not an advocacy group. Our aim is a campus where disagreement is something students can do well, rather than something they avoid.

Mission
The Lehigh AstroBiology Society is for anyone who has wondered whether life exists beyond Earth and wants to do something about it.

We explore the origin, distribution, and future of life in the universe. Complementing Lehigh's astronomy and space engineering groups, we focus on the biological and geochemical side of the question: how organisms survive extreme conditions, how we detect the traces life leaves behind, what makes a world habitable, and how we might grow food and recycle air well enough to live somewhere that isn't Earth.

We do this hands-on. Members work with Martian and lunar regolith simulants, analyze real spaceflight data from NASA's open science repositories, get out into the field to collect rocks and meteorites, hear from Lehigh researchers doing this work now, and build project teams aiming at national student research and design competitions.

No background required, and no class year is too early. Astrobiology sits at the intersection of biology, geology, chemistry, physics, and engineering; it needs all of those people, and so do we.

Membership Benefits
Members gain hands-on experience in astrobiology and planetary science. Activities include analyzing NASA open science datasets from the GeneLab/OSDR repository, working with lunar and Martian regolith simulants, and conducting field excursions for rock, mineral, and meteorite collection with geochemical interpretation. The Society hosts talks by Lehigh faculty and graduate researchers on active work in astrobiology and planetary geochemistry, and attends public astronomy programs in the Lehigh Valley. Members can join project teams pursuing a submission to a national NASA student design competition and a research proposal for a crewed analog mission at the Mars Desert Research Station. No prior background is required; members come from engineering, the life sciences, and the physical sciences.
